Questions for DataCenter on Shared Leadership Model
Oct 30 2009, 1:53 PM EDT | Post edited: Oct 30 2009, 1:53 PM EDT
On October 21st, Miho Kim and Celia Davis of the DataCenter led a session of the Bay Area LLC Circle on the model of Shared Leadership the center adopted. It was a great session, but not enough time for follow up questions. Therefore, we are providing this space for you to submit any questions about their model that you may have. I will be interviewing Celia the week of November 9th and will compile your questions as part of the interview. The interview will then be written up and posted for the entire community. Please submit any questions you may have here.

Note that the materials from the meeting can be found under the heading of "Collective Leadership" and are listed in attachments.

I found the session provocative and it raised many questions for me. One that keeps coming up for me is around the issue of bringing on new staff. Those at the DataCenter who engaged in the two year journey toward a model of Shared Leadership have worked together through the entire process. How do you bring on new staff? What is that process of integration? Do you find this valuable?

At the session, you talked about rotating positions every two years so that an individual would be 80% program and 20% administrative, and then the next two years 80% administrative and 20% program. Since we all bring with us certain interests and strengths, and where one person might be very strong at administrative and another at program - how has the rotation played out at DataCenter? Also, often it takes at least two years to grow adept at building a particular skill, etc. - does that not create a void on some level? How is that filled? What role does mentoring play? Do you find this valuable?

Great presentation! Here are a couple of additional questions:
What are the most common challenges of this model on a day-to-day basis? How does your team work to overcome them?
What is the turnover rate and how do you deal with the fluctuations in staff?
In your opinion, what are the key advantages of the collective leadership model?
